 The Perinatal Wellness Coalition promotes community collaboration to support families from preconception through early childhood for Santa Barbara County. PWC serves to increase access to perinatal services for mental health and substance use through education, prevention, screening and advocacy.

  1. Introductions


  1. Review November Minutes – Approved.


  1. Change in meeting times – 2nd Tuesday of the month, 2PM-3:30. February meeting deferred because of the PSU Panel.  Start new meeting time on 2nd Tuesday of each month on March 14, 2017. Deborah


  1. Perinatal Substance Use Panel planning and update

    • Flyers/Advertising – edits mad and to be distributed again

    • Community Response – 53 have signed up thus far.  

    • Review of Panel Presentations and Panelist response

      • Panelists will be asked questions as a group.  Sandra to Notify.  Each have 5 minutes to speak.  Generate a discussion.

      • Elisa Gottheil – Will prepare handouts.  Does not need AV equipment.

  2. PAC/LAC Maternal Mental Health Presentation – January 17, 2017

    1. Kelley Barragan will represent MCAH in her Perinatal Services Coordinator role and PWC.  Jane Honikman will also represent PWC.  Sandra has a conflicting meeting that day.  Inland Empire and Dignity will present.

    2. Representatives have been asked to bring flyers and share website information.

  3. Dignity Health PPD program Update - Kelley Barragan.  Next meeting Tuesday February 28, 2017. Baseline survey with providers re: PPD and PSU.

Florene – California Collaborative for Social Emotional Foundations for Early Learning (CaCSEFEL) training for 35 for preschool teachers in Lompoc, Vandenberg, SBCEO -Lompoc SY and Zaca are in process. Five modules. Meeting monthly for leadership meeting.  First 5 has made CSEFEL a budget item. Florene is currently trained as a preschool trainer.  Florene is being trained as a trainer for infant-toddler.  Florene is retiring from CSEFEL and Guadalupe in June.  Will maintain leadership in WEB.

Welcome Every Baby (WEB) will continue to be funded through First 5 as a one year continuation through June, 2018.  WEB has chosen to be a Durham Connect (WEB Family Connect) evidence-based program.  Funded by SBCH and an anonymous donor.  All nurses (4) will be trained.


Jane – Jane shared about Marce Society - International Mental Health Conference in Australia.  Next conference in September, 2018 Bangalore, India. 

PSI is forming chapters in the US.  Jane traveled to Connecticut, Florida, New York working with postpartum groups.  In Florida, a group is doing a training pilot to train mothers to assist mothers with PPD. 

Jane’s program, Postpartum Action Institute, facilitates groups for personal and professional goal setting.  She will have groups next month.  See website.  Shoshana is a clinical psychologist that works with professionals as an associate with PAI. 

Jane will present her curriculum Postpartum Action in Virginia for preschool teachers getting them comfortable with the topic of postpartum depression. 

PEP is working on sponsoring Melissa Bangs June 3, 2017.  She gives a one-woman show.  PEP will celebrate 40 years PEP.
